We begin our journey at the iconic Plaza San Martín, learning about Peru’s independence. From there, we walk down the historic Jirón de la Unión, admiring the mixture of classic and modern architecture.

Stand in the heart of the city where Lima was founded. We will explore the majestic Cathedral, the Archbishop’s Palace, and time it perfectly to discuss the history behind the Government Palace.

Located right in front of Plaza San Martín, the Gran Hotel Bolívar is a living monument to Lima’s Golden Age. Inaugurated in 1924 to celebrate the centenary of Peru’s independence, this majestic hotel was the first large-scale luxury accommodation built in the city.
During its glory days, its opulent rooms and spectacular stained-glass dome welcomed global icons like Ava Gardner, Orson Welles, Ernest Hemingway, and even The Rolling Stones.
Beyond its aristocratic architecture and ghost stories, the hotel is world-famous for a liquid treasure: it is considered one of the historic cathedrals of the Pisco Sour. It is the birthplace of the famous “Pisco Sour Catedral”, a double-sized version of Peru’s national cocktail. No visit to the historic center is complete without admiring its elegant lobby and learning why this hotel remains a symbol of Peruvian hospitality and heritage.

For decades, Jirón de la Unión was the most elegant boulevard in Lima, famously described by Peruvian writer Abraham Valdelomar with the phrase: “The Peru is Lima, Lima is the Jirón de la Unión…”
Today, this vibrant pedestrian street serves as the direct bridge connecting Plaza San Martín with the Plaza de Armas. Walking down its blocks is like traveling through time. As you stroll, you will see a fascinating contrast between modern local commerce and breathtaking historic architecture, such as the stunning French-baroque facade of the Palacio de la Unión and the beautiful Church of La Merced, a colonial masterpiece carved entirely in stone. It is the perfect place to feel the true energy of daily life in Lima.
