The importance of exploring Lima with a Certified Professional Guide

Why book the city’s Free Walking Tour with an official guide?

Because Lima is nearly 500 years old, and every corner of the city center has a story to tell. A church, a colonial balcony, a legend passed down from parents to children. Without a good guide, visitors walk right past all that history without realizing it.
The tour is led by a graduate in Tourism and an Official Guide recognized by MINCETUR. That is, they have a college degree, a valid license, and authorization from the Peruvian government to practice. In the city center, there are many people offering tours without accreditation, but with them, we not only risk receiving fabricated information but also, and perhaps worse, having no recourse if something goes wrong.

What is the Free Walking Tour of the Historic Center?

It is a leisurely, two-hour walk through Lima’s Historic Center, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. It starts at Plaza San Martín, from where the group crosses Plaza Mayor, passes the Government Palace, the Cathedral, the Municipal Palace, Jirón de la Unión, the Convent of San Francisco, and a couple of colonial nooks that almost no one includes in their tours.
The tour is conducted in English and Spanish, with separate groups for each language so that no one has to wait for translations.

Is the Free Walking Tour really free?

Of course, there is no charge when you make your reservation. At the end of the tour, it’s up to each visitor to decide how much to tip the tour guide, depending on how much they enjoyed the tour. The average tip tourists leave is usually around 10 euros per person, although tipping our guide is voluntary and depends on each person’s budget.
This model, known in other countries as “pay what, you wish” means that the guide truly strives to provide excellent service, and it allows backpackers, families, and students to explore Lima without breaking the bank.

In which languages is the tour conducted?

In English and Spanish, in separate groups. The idea is for each visitor to receive the information in their own language and at their own pace, without simultaneous translations that interrupt the flow of the story.

Where is the meeting point?

At Plaza San Martín, right in the heart of the Historic District. It’s a central location that’s easy to find; taxis, Ubers, and buses from Miraflores, San Isidro, and Barranco can get there without any trouble. Once your reservation is confirmed, the guide will send you the exact location and departure time via WhatsApp.

How long does the tour last?

About 2 hours. Sometimes it runs a little longer, depending on the group and the questions that come up along the way. The pace is relaxed, with breaks to take photos, rest, and take your time exploring each place.

Do I need to book in advance?

Ideally, you should book at least 12 hours in advance via WhatsApp or the online form. This allows us to organize groups by language and confirm the guide’s availability. If someone wants to join at the last minute, we can accommodate them, but it depends on whether there’s still space available.

Is it safe to walk around Lima’s Historic Center?

The tour passes only through the tourist areas of the Historic Center, where there is a constant presence of the Tourism Police and city security officers. The routes are carefully planned, and the guide accompanies the group at all times.
As in any capital city, it is recommended that you avoid flashing your cell phone or camera unnecessarily and keep your belongings in sight. With these basic precautions, the tour goes off without a hitch.

What does it mean for a guide to be certified by MINCETUR?

MINCETUR is Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism, the agency that regulates tourism in the country. To obtain an Official Tour Guide license, one must complete a university degree in Tourism and Hospitality with a specialization in Official Tour Guiding, and then pass the professional certification exam administered by the government.
This is no minor procedure. This requirement exists to protect tourists and ensure that the historical information they receive is accurate, verified, and respectful of the country’s heritage.
