Located right in front of Plaza San Martín, the Gran Hotel Bolívar is a living monument to Lima’s Golden Age. Inaugurated in 1924 to celebrate the centenary of Peru's independence, this majestic hotel was the first large-scale luxury accommodation built in the city.
During its glory days, its opulent rooms and spectacular stained-glass dome welcomed global icons like Ava Gardner, Orson Welles, Ernest Hemingway, and even The Rolling Stones.
Beyond its aristocratic architecture and ghost stories, the hotel is world-famous for a liquid treasure: it is considered one of the historic cathedrals of the Pisco Sour. It is the birthplace of the famous "Pisco Sour Catedral", a double-sized version of Peru’s national cocktail. For decades, Jirón de la Unión was the most elegant boulevard in Lima, famously described by Peruvian writer Abraham Valdelomar with the phrase: "The Peru is Lima, Lima is the Jirón de la Unión..."

As you stroll, you will see a fascinating contrast between modern local commerce and breathtaking historic architecture, such as the stunning French-baroque facade of the Palacio de la Unión and the beautiful Church of La Merced, a colonial masterpiece carved entirely in stone.
